Homemade Christmas Food Gifts

christmas food gifts cookies with ribbon

Homemade Christmas food gifts are a fantastic way of adding a lovely personal touch to your Christmas gift basket, OR if you package them up creatively, they make great Christmas presents to give as standalone gifts too.

Most people love to receive YUMMY TREATS to eat at Christmas time.

If you've got the time then WHY NOT try making a few handmade Christmas gift ideas yourself.

You could add both sweet and savory Christmas food gifts, or just stick to one or the other, depending on your recipients personal taste.

PRESENTATION IDEAS

Shortbread or Christmas cookies iced and made into Christmas shapes such as trees, bells or candy canes are ALWAYS popular choices.

Pop them into themed Christmas gift bags or boxes and decorate simply with ribbons in complimentary colors.

Need a couple of ideas for CHEAP Christmas gifts for your co-workers that are guaranteed to please?

1. Make or buy some small Christmas cakes and decorate the cake first by taping a length of ribbon around the outside of the cake. Pop the cake into a box lined with red, green or gold tissue paper (add some scrunched up tissue in the bottom first if the box is too deep, you don't want your cake to disappear from sight!).

Use a box with a lid and decorate the box with Christmas decorations such as pine cones or holly and ribbons and bows, of course!

You could easily substitute Christmas puddings for this food gift idea if you prefer, check out christmas gift basket ideas for gift wrapping instructions.

Use a box with a lid and place the jars in the box side by side with the labels facing up. Choose a box that's just a tiny bit bigger so the jars will fit snugly together (much less likely to get broken that way!).

You could decorate all your gifts the same or, make them all different! Red boxes with white bows look simple and elegant or go for red or black boxes
with gold ribbons for something a little more dramatic.

Yummy Onion Jam

For a great savory idea try making this versatile chutney that's loaded with flavor and PERFECT to use in a variety of ways!

It's fantastic for adding a little EXTRA ZING to a plain sandwich, or serve it warm alongside a meat or chicken dish.

For a simple but tasty appetizer add a couple of tablespoons to a slice of bruschetta and top with a little crumbled feta cheese, YUM!

Onion Jam Recipe
10 large onions
500mls balsamic vinegar
1 cup of brown sugar
Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Peel and slice the onions.

  2. Saute in a pot for approximately 10 minutes until transparent but not brown.

  3. Add brown sugar and the balsamic vinegar to the onions and cook until the onions are very dark brown and almost all of the liquid is gone.

  4. Remove from the heat and add salt and pepper to taste.

Store in the fridge in an airtight container, will last up to about six weeks.

The sugar and vinegar in this chutney act as preservatives which is what gives it such a fabulous long life!

As a general rule though, most of your homemade Christmas food gifts won't have the same shelf life as store bought products (but will taste SOOOO much nicer!) so do try to make them as close to Christmas as you can.
