Christmas Sugar Cookies

Try these SIMPLE IDEAS to get you started. Gift Box - square or oblong shape, ice and add lines across and down the biscuit and add a tiny bow in the middle. Christmas Tree - tree shape, ice and add lines to look like tinsel and small silver cachous to resemble Christmas decorations. Candy Cane - cane shape, ice and add stripes. Snowman - snowman shape, ice and add buttons, eyes and a nose. House - square shape (just add a triangle shape at the top for the roof) ice and add windows and a door, like a gingerbread house! Star - star shape - ice and add sprinkles. This super easy holiday cookie recipe is delicious and makes about 60 cookies....so plenty to go round!
Christmas sugar cookies 1 1/2 cups butter, softened 2 cups white sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
- Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Use your Christmas cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
- Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.
Christmas Sugar Cookies Icing
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon butter, softened 1 tablespoon light corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract food coloring - Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Mix together until the powdered sugar is moistened.
- Use an electric beater and beat the icing on a medium speed until smooth, adding more water if you need to until it reaches the desired consistency.
- Place your icing into individual bowls and tint with food color.
Put your iced cookies into small cellophane bags tied securely with a length of Christmas ribbon or pop them into a small box. Lie them flat and try not to pile too many on top of each other, remember the decorations will be quite delicate!
