Top Ideas for Creative Birthday Presents
Finding new and creative birthday presents for those special people on your birthday list year after year can be somewhat of a challenge.
Luckily Sophie from
great happy birthday ideas
has kindly agreed to share with us some of her fabulous tips and ideas for creating a one-of-a-kind celebration!Hi Sophie, can you tell us a bit about you and your site?I'd love to Jackie.
I live in the Scottish Highlands with my husband and two children. I love any celebration, but especially birthdays and creative birthday presents. Last year I decided to turn my passion for birthdays into a website www.great-happy-birthday-ideas.com
It does seem to have taken over my life some-what, most days are spent writing content for my site, and searching for the best ideas.
So far the site covers creative birthday presents, parties, cakes and I'm also developing a section on happy birthday songs, including a rather cringworthy video how to play happy birthday on the recorder!
Where is the best place to look for creative birthday presents? The world wide web is most definitely the best place to look for any gift. Apart from the fact you can do it from your own armchair, you have a world store at your finger tips. The two big ones I particularly like are Amazon and Ebay. Start with thinking about the person you're buying for. Jot down their interests, hobbies and likes.
For example my husband is a musician, he plays the saxophone. A quick search of 'saxophones' on ebay returned a whole host of gift ideas. Such as cuff links, canvas prints and funky wall art, signed photo's and CD's and even a saxophone cake topper that I can use on his birthday cake!
Can you tell us some more about your free happy birthday messages idea?Sure, this is a novel way to send a birthday message to someone. The idea is that you write a birthday message or poem to a friend, loved one, or relative, you then type this directly into the form on my website. There's even the option to add a photo or two. I then turn this into a web page for you that goes live on the web. I'll send you a link when it's ready and you can send that on to the person. It's really cool and best of all free! You can try happy birthday messages here
What creative birthday presents would be suitable for those hard to buy for teenagers?Well now you asked the right person, having two teenagers myself! I tend to find teenagers usually tell me what they want, however their ideas are normally well over my limit. For example this year they would like a lap top and an iphone4 hmmm!
Many teenagers spend a lot of time in their rooms, so buying some special birthday presents for their bedroom may be a winner. Some funky luxurious bedding, a bedside lamp (my kids both have 'touch sensitive' reading lights in their rooms that turn on and off when you touch the base).
Some wall art would be fun. Have you got a photo they like, perhaps of the family, themselves on their own or with friends, or even a pet. Have this turned into a canvas print in a 'pop art' style.
I came across a funny teen gift recently. It's an alarm clock that is on wheels. When it goes off it jumps off the table and races around the bed room. It has to be caught before it can be turned off. I'm thinking of getting one for my son!
Can you give us your top 5 tips for creating a memorable birthday experience?Absolutely, here goes...
- Create a birthday rather than just handing over a gift and card. Breakfast in bed, little note on the dashboard of the car or in the lunch box. Happy Birthday text. If you don't live with the person you must call them on their birthday.
- You can't have a birthday without a cake! If you can make one, that's perfect. If not then perhaps add a personalized touch to a store bought cake.
- Create birthday traditions that can be carried on year after year. These are especially good for kids. For example keep a birthday scrap book, and take a picture of them them on their birthday every year at the time they were born. Add this to the scrap book, it'll make a wonderful keepsake as the years go by.
- Take some time choosing a card, get something that's relative to their interests or hobbies. Better still make one! Try to find something interesting to say in the card rather than just signing 'from', a little poem or ditty, if you can't think of one yourself, use someone elses!
- Giving an experience as a gift really makes the birthday memorable. For example hire a sports car for a day, take them to see a show or for tea somewhere special. One of my favorite birthday presents was going to a pottery with my family. Everyone made a pot for me and painted it. We had great fun on the day and I have a selection of 'very special' creative birthday presents as a memoir.

Need Unusual Birthday Present Ideas?
"Thanks so much, you’ve ended my search for unusual birthday presents! I LOVE your idea of linking family and friends birthdays to famous people’s birthdays that they share. It’s such a simple idea, that I know everyone will enjoy, yet I never thought of doing it.
Especially how easy, and what fun, it could be to make a PERSONALIZED THEMED GIFT BASKET to showcase the link. Finding out which famous person or showbiz personality my family and friends share their birthday with will be HEAPS OF FUN for me too. I’ve only just started looking, but I’m already inspired at how I can make some very unusual birthday presents indeed!
It must be fate, because I’ve been wracking my brain trying to think of a REALLY REALLY UNUSUAL 50th birthday present idea for my dad’s birthday, and that’s one of the things you describe as incredibly hard too.
Now, I won’t have to search for
unusual birthday presents
for him or anyone else I know. I’ll just find out WHICH FAMOUS PERSON they share their birthday with, and surprise them with their own personalized themed gift basket. I can even see myself becoming famous, as the queen of the unusual birthday present!
Thanks again!"
