Custom Gift Box Wrapping Idea

Use this brilliant custom gift box wrapping idea and ensure your gifts stay perfectly presented inside your handmade gift box, right to their destination. Wrapping your gifts inside the box, creates wonderfully unique gift boxes that are an absolute delight to make and even more fun to receive!

  • First you’ll need to purchase some fabric for this custom gift box wrapping idea. The best product to buy is the same material that is used to strengthen the facings on garments, collars, waistbands and so on.

Called Vilene or interfacing it works brilliantly well as it doesn’t fray and has minimal creasing. You'll need a weight that’s heavy enough that it won’t tear but is also soft enough to be folded.

Make sure you get plain interfacing and not the iron on variety!

You can purchase white or colored, or plain or patterned, just choose whatever matches your theme best. For instance gold is wonderful at Christmas time and a white lacy pattern is perfect for wedding gifts and bridal showers.

  • You’ll also want to make up a strip of tissue paper as the final step for this idea. Use a sheet of paper that’s about half as long again as your empty box and about eight inches wide. Fold the tissue paper in half once (lengthwise) and then in half again, it should be about two inches wide.

On the second fold make sure you fold the tissue paper ever so slightly under the top edge so you keep the rough edges hidden.

Instructions for Wrapping

  1. Start by placing your gifts inside the empty box and moving them around until they fit perfectly, a bit like a jig saw puzzle! If you need more help with this step check out the assembly instructions on the make your own gift basket page.

Once you’re happy with the placement take your gifts and place them in exactly the same way as they were in the box on your work bench.

Tip:If you’re making lots of boxes that all need to look the same (for a corporate order for instance) make up one gift box as a sample. That way you can refer to it as you go along.

  2. Lay the interfacing out on your bench and place the box on top, facing in the same direction that you will be presenting your gifts. Fold one edge of the interfacing across the box in one direction and then across in the opposite direction and cut. You will need just enough interfacing to tuck in at the top and bottom edges so cut off any extra if you have too much.

Place enough excelsior or paper shred in the bottom of the box to give you a nice firm base and raise your gifts up a little.

  3. Place the box on the bench and put the interfacing inside, on top of the paper shred or excelsior, pressing down gently using the flat of your hands. Make sure you have the same amount of interfacing overhanging on each side. Place your gifts back in the box (the same way you have placed them on your bench) on top of the interfacing.

  4. Turn your box around sideways and pull the interfacing up from both sides so the edges meet together in the middle, making sure there is an even amount on both sides and adjust if necessary. Starting at the top fold the edges over about one inch and then continue folding until there is no slack left in the interfacing and the fold is as close to the middle of the box that you can make it.

Tip: The easiest way to do this is to imagine you are wrapping a sandwich! Truly! Also interfacing doesn’t crease too badly so you can have several attempts at this if you need to.

  5. Once you are happy with the placement of the fold tuck the top and bottom edges of the interfacing under at each end. You can use a ruler to poke any stray pieces of shredded paper or excelsior out of sight.

Straighten the interfacing and move it around a bit if you need to (but take care not to disassemble the gifts underneath!)

  6. Lay your tissue paper strip along the length of the fold and tuck the edges neatly underneath at each end. You can pop your gift card inside the box if you like, tuck it in underneath the tissue strip.

    You're almost done!

  7. Place the lid carefully on your custom gift box and head to how to tie a bow for some great ideas on decorating and finishing off your gorgeous handmade gift box idea.
